FINALITÀ

To offer a thorough reading of the history of the Church, from the mid-XV century through the late XVIII century, through a methodology that allows students to acquire a reliable capacity of reading, inquiring, and synthetizing.

ARGOMENTI

1. Luther and the Protestant revolt in Germany until the Peace of Augsburg. John Calvin and Calvinism. Henry VIII and Anglicanism. 2. The Catholic Reform. The Council of Trent. Elements of post-Tridentine reformation (1563-1648). 3. The triumph of civil Absolutism in Europe and the growing revolts against spiritual authority. A society officially Christian. A Church controlled by the State. Christian life in a mundane Church. The Jansenism. The Enlightenment. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course, students are expected to: Be able to identify and evaluate elements carried by popular memory and appreciate the positive and negative developments within the different confessions; appraise the complex development of the relations between Church and States; examine the origins of long-term movements of ideas and practices still present in today’s Churches and communities; evaluate the advances and setbacks of the evangelisation movement during these centuries.
